Lucian Freud the early years in Hazlitt's

pity it's over now.. sketches of birds, sea life, faces, experiments in paint. cool, telling works that preempt his famous lumpy thunderous freaky portraits. The artist who most successfully disregarded the major movements in modern art in the 20th century?

Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel in the Royal Opera House

We went to Hansel und Gretel in Covent Garden last night. Our tickets were in the stage right of the circle, and we peered over the orchestra pit. It was amazing watching the orchestra so closely. Opera is so strange how it's really unlike theatre, yet it resembles it. All of the elements of theatre seem only there to accomodate the music. You know? The storyline of this opera was really light hearted and utterly changed from the Grimm fairytale. The parents in this were just randy and stupid, whereas they are meant to abandon the children in the forest for example.

It's strange how the opera house is really only for adults, although this children's story is used here and told in the fluffiest, most lighthearted way. There was a cringeworthy tableau involving christmas trees, teddybears and presents for instance! And to prove this point, a spanish mother and child sat near us, naturally enough the child was restless and made quite a bit of noise. Their neighbour stood up at the interval and scolded them. HA.

A call for the end of cute cat pictures

These kittens are not cute. I am very much a cat woman, well before my years :( But these kittens are not cute. The one on the left looks terrified, and the one on the right looks like it's just been woken up, is hungry, wants the one on the left to get off it's back, and it needs a piss. Not cute. Does this sound like I'm angry? I'm not. Bye.

Marina Carr

Herrow. I went to see Marina Carr's Woman and Scarecrow in the Peacock in Dublin during the theatre festival before last. Olwyn Foueré was amazing. I went with me ma. Marina Carr's new work, The Cordelia Dream is on in London as of this week and I really wanna go. The end. I love how this press picture evokes the Pieta.

...because it's exactly what the characters are not
